PayPal’s Rise in Australia’s Mobile Casino Boom
20 October 2026
Ahead of 2026, Australians shopping online face a growing concern: making payments on websites without PayPal. For three-quarters of online shoppers, or 76%, PayPal is not just a preference – it's a requirement, according to the PayPal 2026 eCommerce Index. PayPal dominates Australia's online payments, preferred by 30% of consumers, making it the go-to payment option in the eCommerce landscape.
This demand for PayPal traces to the immense rise of mobile shopping. Australians now shop exclusively on mobile at a growing rate, up to 24% compared to 7% in just the last year, the PayPal 2026 Index shows. Mobile-first shopping has driven a surge in non-casino mobile gambling.
ACMA's 2023 report on Australia's social casinos paints a picture of a massive multi-million-dollar market growing in mobile-first player segments. With consumer spending on mobile slots alone reaching $302 million USD in 2021, social casino companies target mobile users with frequent, small-ticket deposits. ACMA notes that social gaming is specifically designed for microtransactions, with 85% of all revenue from in-game purchases under $0.20.
Speed is key to retaining slot players – even short waits at a payment wall can mean lost bettors. Digital wallets are especially suited to the quick deposits required for this model. PayPal's mobile app allows instant payments without entering full card details, better than bank transfers or other checkout methods.
This connection between mobile payments and Australia's gameplay-risk market has not gone unnoticed. PayPal's infographic spotlighting its role in domestic eCommerce comes as the company appears poised to capture more of Australia's gambling-adjacent, mobile-first transactions.
In 2023, ACMA placed Australia in the top five global markets by consumer spend on social casino games – games that are typically free to download, supporting themselves entirely on frequent microtransactions. 82% of those who bought in-game items did so on mobile, according to the social casino report. As a result, we should expect the online gambling ecosystem to prioritize mobile app payments. "Consumer demand will play a key role in the market evolving," says ACMA in its report.
Mobile wallets' speed, reliability and convenience are uniquely suited to casino advertising, limiting churn and encouraging recurring payments. With PayPal as the premier risk-free online payment option in Australia, digital casino operators and marketers now face a competitive advantage - or disadvantage - based on which payment options are offered. Given the 76% of consumers who prioritize PayPal, integration with the company's mobile payment app represents a significant opportunity.
In this landscape, Australia's gambling services may find their viability increases with PayPal's adoption, mirroring PayPal's broader role in the consumer ecosystem. As mobile-first shopping rises, so do concerns for payment reliability, but also favourable attitudes to digital wallets. On both shirts, setting up smooth PayPal payments may be key to earning and retaining customers in a growing mobile shopping market.
Nonetheless, Australia still needs clearer regulation around gambling and gambling-adjacent spending. With mobile wallets and social casino markets on the march, it's at this intersection that policymakers will be most challenged to keep up with the changing payments landscape after 2026.
